It's that time of the school year already...first term is almost over and we had conferences last week for both Eliana and Meirah. Eliana is doing a great job settling into her new classroom. She had a few adjustments but her teacher loves having her in the classroom. She also feels like Eliana's attention span is right where it needs to be and she is able to focus all day without much redirection. She does have her moments though and still struggles with listening to all of the teachers directions but overall she's doing really well. She attends a friendship group once a week during her lunch period where she gets to meet new students and also work on three goals she and her teacher identified. One main goal was learning and following the rules of school. She likes to wander around after a bathroom break and visit with the school secretary (ever the social butterfly) and just go where she's not supposed to be. She loves having lunch with Megan (the intern who runs the group) and feels special because she gets to being a friend. Her teacher commented many times about how colorful and creative she is. She showed us worksheets that Ellie embellished with hearts and stars after completing the work (we were just happy the work was completed, big improvement over last year!) and another assignment where Ellie had drawn out a very sad scenario and story. It was a picture of people crying great big tears and she had attempted to write something underneath (they just started spelling words!!) and on top of the page her teacher had translated the story. Apparently Ellie told her teacher that a long time ago her grandpa died....uhh no, not so. We just laughed and cleared that little misunderstanding up. Other than that we noticed that her reading level is a little low so we are working more on that at home to help her bump that up. She can earn "dollars" that she can use to buy things from us by reading books...but I'll explain more about that later. I have a fun video to post.
We had preschool conferences as well. Mimi now goes four days a week to preschool and loves it. Her teacher had really positive things to report about her as well. She 's achieving at or above her age level and is polite and kind to the other kids. The only thing the little stinker does is gives her teacher a hard time when it comes to clean up and even tries to hide so she doesn't have to help with clean up at the end of the day!
We are still trying to decide as to whether or not we will send her to Kindergarten next year. She had her 4 year old screening about a month ago (the State of MN says all kids need to have an early childhood screening before entering kindergarten, preferably while they are four) and essentially aced it. She went off with the teacher for the evaluation and when they came back 45 minutes later the teacher was laughing and said they had a prodigy on their hands. I went back to go over the test results with the early childhood director who essentially said she needed 21 points to pass at an age appropriate level and she got all 32 points on the evaluation. We don't doubt she would be ready cognitively but emotionally might be another story. This next year will be telling.
